In December 2021, the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution approving 2022 as the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development (IYBSSD), which aims to highlight the importance of basic science in promoting sustainable development. A series of activities are organized and implemented worldwide from July 2022 to June 2023. The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) is the Steering Committee and Advisory Committee member of IYBSSD. Under the framework of IYBSSD, the Forum for the Dark and Quiet Sky Protection will be held during April 14 - 15, 2023 at Xinglong Observatory. This meeting is hosted by the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAOC) and supported by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The theme of the forum will be "protect the dark and quiet sky and promote the sustainable development of astronomical observations." This forum aims to strengthen international exchanges and cooperation on the protection of the dark and quiet sky, and enhance public awareness of this valuable resource for the sustainable development of basic scientific research in astronomy.
