到目前为止，只有两个小质量恒星形成区的HI星风被阿雷西博望远镜探测到，这主要是在上世纪80-90年代完成的。13.7米毫米波射电望远镜是我国唯一的一架工作在毫米波波段的天文观测设备，工作频段为85—115GHz，望远镜年均开机运行300天，24小时持续运行。

国家天文台兴隆观测基地于2019年底遴选出了2.16米望远镜、85厘米望远镜观测重点课题。在过去三年的支持期内，这些课题取得了可喜的成果，据统计，共发表（或即将发表）科研论文近80篇，培养研究生以及青年科研人员近60位，许多成果在社会媒体上也获得公众的关注。为继续保障国家天文台兴隆观测基地2.16米望远镜和85厘米望远镜的高效运行和高质量产出，现启动新一轮2.16米望远镜、85厘米望远镜观测重点课题申请和遴选工作。国家天文科学数据中心为2.16米望远镜、85厘米望远镜提供数据与技术服务。

上世纪90年代Alex Szalay教授与图灵奖获得者吉姆·格雷（Jim Gray）博士共同为斯隆数字巡天（SDSS）计划构造数据库系统，开创了使用数据库来规范化管理和发布天文数据的先河。Szalay教授除了学识渊博还爱好广泛，是匈牙利上世纪70-80年代小有名气的Panta Rhei乐队主力吉他手。2017和2018年乐队成员重新聚集，在布达佩斯和德布勒森等城市巡回演出。
